Australia’s New Student Visa Rules Come Into Effect Tomorrow. What Will Be The Impact On Indian Students?

Australia has made significant changes to its visa rules for international students. This new rule, Ministerial Direction 115, which will come into effect on November 14, 2025, will make the visa application process more transparent and balanced. Its aim is to ensure international students can study not only in major cities but also in smaller cities and regional educational institutions.

Over the past few years, the number of international students in Australia has been growing rapidly, putting pressure on universities, hostels, and local resources. The government tightened regulations, resulting in a 26% decrease in new visa applications and a 16% decrease in new course enrolments in 2025. Universities can now focus on quality, ensure student accommodation, and prevent abuse of visa rules.

Smaller Institutions Will Get A Chance

Under the new rule, Ministerial Direction 115, the visa process will now be more fair. Educational institutions that manage their international student numbers responsibly will receive priority in the visa application process. This change will also allow smaller vocational and training institutions to accept students, and will not be limited to large universities.

What Changes Will Happen For Indian Students?

Indian students can now apply to institutions that comply with quality and regulations. Under this rule, the visa process will be faster and more transparent. The Australian government will also hold information sessions on this new rule in November and December to help institutions and students understand the changes.
