Surveen Chawla, who made her debut with a bold film like Hate Story 2, has carved a niche for herself as an actor by doing offbeat films and series like Ugly, Parched, Sacred Gays. This year, Surveen, who was seen in four web shows Criminal Justice 4, Mandala Murders, Rana Naidu 2 and Andhera, had a special conversation with her on various aspects.
You Have Always Chosen Bold And Offbeat Characters From Hate Story 2, Parched To Sacred Gays And The Recent Show Andhera. Or Do You Have A Criterion For Choosing Characters?
I get such odd roles as soon as I get a role, otherwise I feel like doing simple, light-hearted work with songs and dance. Those hard core commercial films are my favourites. I have done many mainstream dance and song love story films in Punjabi and other regional languages, but now the content has become a little different. More dark content is being made, but as a viewer I would like to see light content and also be a part of it. I believe that whatever work you do in the beginning, you get the same in the future and I have never made a safe choice. That is not in my DNA.
I do not say yes thinking that if it is risky then I should do it. Today, along with work and family, my child is also my priority, so I would like to do such work, which gives me the same happiness, which I get after seeing my child after a long day. There should be the same enthusiasm and sparkle in my eyes regarding that work.
You Said That Your Initial Choices Decide Your Future Path, So After Day U With A Film Like Hate Story 2, Was There No Attempt To Fit You In That Mould?
Not Hate Story 2, but soon after the release of Parched, I was offered a film by a well-known director with a great set-up, in which my role was exactly like the one in Parched. That role came to me because I had done a similar role, but will I keep doing the same kind of character? Here you have to swallow the bitter pill that you could not be a part of a good film, but I had the courage to say no, not to repeat the character, so yes, sometimes there are attempts to put you in a box and then it is important to say no.
Only then can you save yourself from being stereotyped, otherwise you will get stuck in repetition and it is very easy for the industry to do this. However, it is the responsibility of the makers to imagine the actor in different characters according to their vision, and not to bind him in the same box. Social media stardom is dishonest
My Management Team Is After Me To Do All This, But I Find It All Very Fake.
This stardom has no credibility left, even though social media, pap spotting are the reality of today. I feel it is unfair to actors that today people do casting based on social media followers, not on talent. Even paps are just doing skin show paps. If you are spotting and papping anyone, then it has no importance. I have no interest in telling on Instagram what I ate for breakfast? Or where I took my dog for a walk. Whoever feels like it, let them do it, I don’t see any value in it. This stardom has no meaning, because anyone can become a star.
